- Trends in group 1 and 7 transition metals
- The group 1 elements are found on the left hand side of the periodic table
- They are called alkali metals because they form alkali compounds
- their atoms all have one electron on their outermost shell
- group 1 elements all have similar properties
- Reactions of group 1 elements with water / oxygen
- Lithium, sodium, potassium all react with water to form a metal hydroxide and hydrogen
- need to be stored under oil to prevent them reacting with h20 or 02
- when reacted with oxygen, group 1 metals become dull
- Lithium = red flame, sodium = yellow-orange flame, potassium = lilac flame
- Transition metals are in a large block between group 2, 3
- they are metals
- They are good conductors of heat and electricity
- They can be hammered or bent into shape easily
- Group 7 elements are also know as halogens
- They have 7 electrons in their outer shell
- in a displacement reactor a less reactive element is removed and replaced by a more reactive element
- chlorine is used to sterilise drinking water and in pesticides and plastics , iodine can be used to sterilise wounds
- Sodium chloride, or common salt, is used to preserve food, as flavouring and to manufacture chlorine
- group 7 metals react with alkali metals (group 1)
- The group 1 elements are found on the left hand side of the periodic table
