- ICT CHAPTER 1
- Designing a mobile phone
- GPS
- Navigational system, used in many devices- gives current location/ directions from current location
- distance current location 2 specified location using signals from satellites
- Assisted GPS- technology that has been built into mobile phones. when signal between mobile + satellite= weak, signal sent by mobile phone- diverted 2 mobile masts which identify phones exact location
- User interface- the way a user interacts with a system like computer/ determines how commands are given to computer
- Menus: user chooses the commands from lists displayed on the screen.
- GUI (Graphical user interface) e.g. windows- user gives command by selecting icons displayed on screen
- Command line- used by specialists involves codes
- GPS

- MMS
- Choosing a phone
- Picture resolution
- quality and detail of screen of mobile. higher the resolution, better the quality. measured in pixels
- Camera resolution
- amount of detail camera picks up in 1 picture. higher resolution, more detail camera picks up, measured in mega pixels
- A mobile phone
- Memory card- secondary storage device/ allows users to store, back up, remove files measured in giga bytes
- Music player- saved as MP3 and WAV
- storage capacity- amount of space phone has in its internal memory
- Video files- stored as MP4, 3GP, AVI,
- Connectivity
- WiFi
- similiar to bluetooth, used to exchange data but signal can travel further distance
- Bluetooth
- allows exchange of data over short distances
- to connect to the internet mobile needs 2 receive/ send signals/ needs to connect wirelessly
- WiFi
- Network band
- Dual band- picks up 2 frequences
- tri band- picking up 3 frequences
- quad band- picking up 4 frequences
- Picture resolution
- It is Malfunctional
- ability to do different things using same device
- Mobile phones for everyone
- cons of mobile phones
- Texting too much can lead to repetitive strain injury (RSI)
- young people can be victims of bullying/ crime if targeted for their phone
- mobiles phones not been around for too long, so scientists unsure of risks associated with using them
- As a precautionary, government health advisers recommend that children under 16 should not use mobile phones regularly.
- Overuse of 'text speak' can have impact to spell words properly
- Etiquette (rules), mobile safety advice
- mobile phones= expensive/ easy target for thieves- should activate lock feature that requires pin
- Recycle old phones
- Avoid using mobile phone in quiet area e.g. quiet coaches, trains + libraries
- when driving a car- illegal to talk on phone without hands- free kit
- Activate keypad lock to prevent accidental emergency calls being made
- After taking photo/ video of someone on phone- ask their permission before uploading it to a public domain
- On internet- avoid viewing content- unsuitable for your age
- Don't send malicious messages/ make prank calls- lead to police charging you with harassment
- cons of mobile phones
- Features of a mobile phone
- points to consider when designing phone at elderly people
- navigation or menu system
- number of features available
- Weight of phone
- Volume of capacity of speakers
- Size of screen and buttons
- Panic button to reach relatives easily
- interface
- What kind of computer?
- Laptop
- portable computer/ carries out same functions as desktop computers but in compact version that is light to carry around.
- Netbook
- Similar to notebook/ designed mainly for wireless communication via email/ messaging + access to internet. Usually cheaper/ lower specification compared to laptops/ notebooks+ have solid state memory
- Personal digital assistant (PDA)
- Portable device- small enough to carry in palm of hand. Contains- note-making features/ telephone, internet facilities/ allows data to be exchanged with computers
- Notebook
- Similar to laptop but more compact
- Things to consider when buying computer, laptop, net book, notebook
- Storage capacity- the more you have the more files you can store
- Processor speed- the quicker it is , the faster your device will work
- Amount of RAM- the more RAM it has, the more applications it will be able to support
- RAM- temporary memory/ used to run programs already opened- higher- the more programs can be opened + they will respond. If power fails, unsaved work will be lost/ graphics and videos require more RAM.
- Battery life (portable device)- how long will the power last
- Considering the following features when buying computer
- WIRELESS ENABLED- allows device to pick up WiFi signals/ enable you to connect to network/ connect devices/ access internet without wires
- Date exchanged wirelessly slower than travelling through cables
- Data can be distorted as it travels through air by other signals+ interference's.
- Date exchanged wirelessly slower than travelling through cables
- Sound card/Graphics card- devices to fix computers main circuit/ allowing computer to play/ record sound + display graphics
- Hard drive size= primary storage area of computer/ where software, files + data kept and retrieved from/ measured in gigabytes- bigger the hard drive/ the more data can be stored
- USB connection (universal serial bus)- common method of connecting devices to computer/ if computer has more then 1- many peripherals can use this connection
- Processor (CPU)- brains of computer- does the calculating/ number of calculations (processes)measured in GHz/ higher the processing speed- faster computer- but the more power it uses
- Optical Drive- uses laser to read data encoded on CD's and DVD's/ allows you to install software, listen to music + watch films/ some optical drives allow CD/DVD to be written (burned)-useful if transferring information from the device.
- WIRELESS ENABLED- allows device to pick up WiFi signals/ enable you to connect to network/ connect devices/ access internet without wires
- Laptop
- Peripheral devices

- Projector
- Printer
- Speakers
- Head phones
- Input
- Scanner
- Mouse
- Keyboard
- Webcam
- Storage devices
- External HD
- USB
